AN ADMONITION TO THE GREAT GATHERING
OF THE SANGHA ON THE FULL MOON DAY OF MĀGHA
At a time when the Buddha was staying at the Bamboo Grove near Rājagaha, there was a great gathering of the Buddha’s disptples called Cāturanga Sannipāta i.e. Great Gathering blesses in four ways:
1. It was the full-moon day of the third lunar month;
2. One thousand two hundred and fifty bhikkhus gathered together without prior appointment:
3. They all were fully enlightened (arahants):
4. They all were ordained by the Master himself.
The Buddha then delivered to them a special instruction whereby he summed up his teaching. This was called Ovādapātimokkha, which to mention a few lines, runs as follows:
Abstention from all evil.
Cultivation of the wholesome,
Purification of the heart:
this is the Message of the Buddhas.
It is now considered an auspicious holiday called Māghapūjā Day, when people in all the Buddhist countries perform a special service in commemoration of their Master.
ทรงแสดงโอวาทปาติโมกข์แก่ประชุมสงฆ์ในวันเพ็ญเดือนมาฆะ
ขณะที่พระพุทธเจ้าประทับอยู่ที่เวฬุวัน เมืองราชคฤห์ ได้มีการประชุมครั้งใหญ่ เรียกว่า จาจุรงคสันนิบาต หรือ การประชุมที่ประกอบด้วยองค์ ๔ ประการคือ
๑. วันนั้นเป็นวันมาฆปุรณมีคือ วันเพ็ญเดือน ๓
๒. พระสงฆสาวกจำนวน ๑,๒๕๐ องค์ มาประชุมพร้อมกันโดยมิได้นัดหมายล่วงหน้า
๓. พระสงฆ์ทั้งหมดล้วนเป็นอรหันต์สิ้นกิเลสาสวะ
๔. พระสงฆ์ทั้งหมดล้วนเป็นเอหิภิกขุ คือ พระพุทธเจ้าทรงประทานอุปสมบทให้ด้วยพระองค์เอง
พระพุทธเจ้าทรงแสดงโอวาทปาติโมกข์ คือ หลักธรรมสำคัญหรืออุดมการณ์สำหรับการประกาศพุทธศาสนาแก่สงฆ์สันนิบาตนั้น ซึ่งมีทั้งหมด ๑๓ หัวข้อด้วยกัน ในที่นี้ขอยกมากล่าวเพียง ๓ หัวข้อ คือ
๑. ไม่ทำความชั่วทั้งปวง
๒. ทำความดีให้สมบูรณ์
๓. ทำจิตให้ผ่องใส
ต่อมาพุทธศาสนิกถือเอาวันนี้เป็นวันสำคัญทางพุทธศาสนาวันหนึ่ง เรียกชื่อว่า วันมาฆบูชา
